Cellebrite's Phone-Hacking Tools
A few days ago hacker broke into Cellebrite's network and stole 900GB of data. Now the hacker has dumped some of Cellebrite's phone-hacking tools on the Internet.
In their README, the hacker notes much of the iOS-related code is very similar to that used in the jailbreaking scenea community of iPhone hackers that typically breaks into iOS devices and release its code publicly for free.
Jonathan Zdziarski, a forensic scientist, agreed that some of the iOS files were nearly identical to tools created and used by the jailbreaking community, including patched versions of Apple's firmware designed to break security mechanisms on older iPhones. A number of the configuration files also reference "limera1n," the name of a piece of jailbreaking software created by infamous iPhone hacker Geohot. He said he wouldn't call the released files "exploits" however.

Physical Extraction
For devices supported in this category, the Cellebrite UFED Touch Ultimate will use advanced methods to extract a physical image of the flash memory or address range of a device, including unallocated space. Unlike conventional logical extraction processes, the physical extraction method bypasses the phone’s operating system, acquiring the data directly from the phone’s internal flash memory. Unallocated space may contain access to deleted items such as SMS, Call logs, Phonebook entries, Pictures, and Video. Support for data types automatically decoded are marked for each device. Additional decoding for new content types will be constantly updated with each new UFED Touch Ultimate release. Search tools built into the UFED Physical Analyzer tool can be used to manually search for content types such as SMS messages, for devices not yet supported for automatic decoding (see ‘find’ feature in UFED Ultimate manual).

File System Extraction
For devices supported in this
category, the Cellebrite UFED Touch Ultimate will extract the logical file system as a directory
structure, which does not include unallocated space and decoding for deleted
files. Extracting the file system is an alternative way to get data from
phones, including phone models that are not currently supported with physical
extraction. UFED Touch Ultimate provides
access, and extracts hidden files and databases inaccessible by other file
system acquisition tools.
From
the extracted file system you can get many different types of application files
that can be decoded and then searched for information, such as the Contacts or
SMS database files.
File
system extraction can also be used to locate content types such as SMS and Call
Logs not yet supported by the normal UFED “extract from phone” option.
